About the Project
Winner of the Newcastle Architecture Medal and described by the judging panel as “a remarkable gem of a building”, the Pretty Beach holiday home of Architects Lahznimmo, presented BlairBuild with more than the usual challenges.
The brief was to build a low-maintenance home within the trees that sensitively navigated the challenges of a steep bush site and respected the surrounding flora and fauna.
Designed and constructed over a seven years, the site presented significant challenges making both the approvals and building process extremely complex. The site presented an average gradient of 1 in 3 with large sandstone floaters sitting amongst sand and clay over weathered bedrock with a moist gully running through the centre which was home to the vulnerable Red Crowned Toadlet. Also susceptible to bush fire events, the most extreme BAL-FZ (flame zone) construction was require for the site.
Built entirely of non-combustible materials, the concrete and glazed brick home demonstrates BlairBuild's ability to construct within ecologically sensitive sites prone to bush fires.
